Key Information
ABB AO523 is a high-density S500 analog output module with sixteen outputs arranged in two groups. Channels O0 to O3 and O8 to O11 can be configured for voltage or current output, while channels O4 to O7 and O12 to O15 are voltage-output channels. The module uses 12-bit resolution including sign, module-wise galvanic isolation, channel LEDs and independent channel monitoring parameters. This asymmetric channel map is the defining selection boundary between AO523 and eight-channel AO522.

Installation
- Map the required current loops to O0-O3 or O8-O11 before field wiring; the other eight positions are voltage-only.
- Install the module on the matching TU515 or TU516 terminal unit and verify both output groups.
- Remove supply and process power before connection or replacement unless all documented hot-swap conditions are satisfied.
- Use shielded analog cables, the ABB grounding concept and appropriate equipotential bonding for the process supply.
- Parameterize the channel range, monitoring mode and communication-error behavior separately for every output.
- Commission both groups and verify that current outputs have not been assigned to voltage-only terminals.

- ABB lists article 1SAP250200R0001 as an Active standard module.
- The AO523-XC extreme-condition version is a separate active ordering article.
- Record the complete sixteen-channel assignment before removing an installed AO523.
- AO522 is not a channel-for-channel replacement because it has eight universal outputs and 16-bit resolution.
- After exchange, check scaling, open-circuit monitoring, short-circuit diagnostics and configured substitute values for all channels.
