AC500 / S500 | Spring-terminal serial communication base

ABB TU518 Serial Interface Terminal Unit

A 24 V DC interface base with ten spring terminals for supported CANopen and PROFIBUS DP communication modules.

BrandABB
ModelTU518
Product TypeAC500 Serial Communication Terminal Unit
01

Overview

TU518 is an ABB serial-interface terminal unit for compatible AC500 and S500 communication modules. The spring-terminal construction provides the network and field connections on the base so the plug-in communication interface module can be serviced without removing the terminal wiring.

The terminal arrangement includes ten network-interface positions and three groups of up to eight module-defined I/O channels. For supported CANopen applications, the associated communication module provides the terminating resistors while the bus conductors remain connected at the terminal unit.

Features

  • Spring terminals distinguish TU518 from the screw-terminal TU517 terminal unit.
  • Ten front positions provide the network-interface wiring assigned by the selected communication module.
  • The plug-in module determines the signal allocation for the remaining three channel groups.
  • Mechanical locks retain the communication interface module after it is fully seated.
  • The bus conductors can remain landed on the base when a supported communication module is removed.
04

Applications

  • AC500 and S500 CANopen interface stations using compatible CI581-CN or CI582-CN communication modules.
  • Supported PROFIBUS DP arrangements with CI54x modules at transmission rates up to 1 Mbit/s.
  • Serial fieldbus nodes that require spring-clamp network wiring and a removable plug-in interface module.
  • Control-panel expansions where network continuity and clear terminal identification are important during module service.
05

Lifecycle

  • Retain order code 1SAP211200R0001 when a spring-terminal TU518 is required; TU517 is the screw-terminal counterpart and TU518-XC is a separate extreme-condition variant.
  • Before replacement, identify the installed communication module, protocol, transmission rate, node address and network termination arrangement.
  • In supported CANopen configurations, removing the communication module also removes its internal terminating resistors even though the bus wiring remains connected to TU518.
  • Verify terminal polarity, shield grounding and end-of-segment termination before restoring network operation.

FAQ

How does TU518 differ from TU517?

TU518 uses spring terminals, while TU517 uses screw terminals.

Which serial networks can use TU518?

It is intended for compatible CANopen interface modules and supported PROFIBUS DP CI54x applications.

How many network terminals are provided?

Ten spring-terminal positions, numbered 1.0 through 1.9, form the network-interface group.

Where are CANopen terminating resistors located?

For the supported CI581-CN and CI582-CN arrangements, the terminating resistors are inside the communication module rather than the TU518 base.

Does the terminal unit assign the I/O channels?

No. The inserted communication interface module determines the allocation of the three channel groups.

What should be checked after a module exchange?

Verify the protocol settings, node address, terminal polarity, shield grounding and bus termination.
