Allen-Bradley 22P-D038A103 PowerFlex 400P AC Drive
A 480 V-class three-phase drive with dual normal-duty and heavy-duty ratings, built-in PID control and a 38 A continuous output.
Key Information
22P-D038A103 is a PowerFlex 400P adjustable-frequency AC drive for general industrial motor applications. The complete catalog number identifies the 480 V-class, Frame D configuration with a continuous output-current rating of 38 A.
The drive can be applied at either its normal-duty or heavy-duty rating. This dual-rating structure lets the same hardware serve loads with different short-term overload requirements when the motor and application are selected within the published limits.
Functions
- Controls motor speed through adjustable output frequency using the PowerFlex 400P volts-per-hertz control architecture.
- Provides a built-in PID loop that can generate the complete frequency command or trim another speed reference from process feedback.
- Supports both normal-duty and heavy-duty operation with separate power and overload ratings.
- Integrates an RS-485 communication interface for supported drive networking and parameter access.
- Uses drive status, fault handling and programmable parameters to coordinate motor operation with the machine control system.

Installation
- Mount and wire the Frame D unit under the PowerFlex 400P spacing, ambient-temperature and enclosure instructions.
- Size branch-circuit protection, conductors and the motor circuit from the exact catalog-number tables rather than from the horsepower value alone.
- Bond protective earth correctly and keep power wiring separated from low-level control and process-feedback conductors.
- Enter motor nameplate data and select the intended normal-duty or heavy-duty basis before tuning acceleration, deceleration and current limits.
- For PID operation, confirm the feedback signal, reference selection, engineering scaling and failure response before placing the loop in automatic control.
Lifecycle
- Keep the 22P prefix, D038 current code and A103 construction together when sourcing a service replacement; a similarly rated PowerFlex drive is not automatically configuration-compatible.
- Back up the parameter set and record control-terminal assignments, RS-485 settings, motor data and PID configuration before removing the installed drive.
- A migration review must address enclosure dimensions, branch protection, control logic, communication mapping and motor-duty requirements.
- Recommission the replacement against the actual driven load and verify direction, minimum and maximum frequency, protective trips and process feedback.
