Allen-Bradley 1783-ETAP EtherNet/IP Tap
A three-port copper EtherNet/IP tap for connecting one automation device to linear or Device Level Ring network media.
Product Identification
1783-ETAP is an EtherNet/IP tap with three copper RJ45 ports. One front device port connects a local automation product, while two network ports provide the linear or ring path for Device Level Ring topologies.
The tap operates from 24 V DC and is installed as open-type equipment on DIN rail. Network identity can be established through the hardware switches, BOOTP or DHCP tools, RSLinx Classic or Studio 5000 workflows.

Functions
- Connects a single-port automation device to an EtherNet/IP linear or ring network.
- Passes network traffic between two copper infrastructure ports through the embedded switching function.
- Supports Device Level Ring participation for resilient network designs.
- Separates the device connection physically from the two ring or linear network ports.
- Provides hardware and software methods for assigning the tap IP address.
- Reports network and port status for installation and maintenance diagnostics.
Applications
- Device Level Ring connections for industrial controllers, drives or I/O devices with a single Ethernet port.
- Linear machine networks that require a local device drop without an external unmanaged switch.
- Installed EtherNet/IP panels where the original three-copper-port tap must be serviced.
- Network segments operating within the documented industrial temperature range.
- Migration projects moving to the 1783-ETAP3T replacement after topology and configuration review.
Lifecycle
- 1783-ETAP was discontinued on May 31, 2026 and should be handled as an installed-base service item.
- Rockwell Automation identifies 1783-ETAP3T as the functional replacement.
- A replacement review should compare port arrangement, Device Level Ring role, firmware, configuration and panel wiring.
- Record the IP address, switch settings, ring supervisor design and connected device before removal.
- Validate DLR status, port links, device communication and network recovery behavior after installation.
