Two-channel casing vibration protection

Emerson A6120 AMS 6500 Case Seismic Vibration Monitor

An API 670 compliant hot-swappable monitor for electro-dynamic case vibration sensors on critical rotating machinery.

ManufacturerEmerson
Exact modelA6120
Product typeAMS 6500 Case Seismic Vibration Monitor
01

Product Overview

A6120 is a two-channel case seismic vibration monitor for the AMS 6500 classic machinery protection system. It measures bearing-case velocity from compatible electro-dynamic sensors and compares the result with alarm setpoints.

A6120 occupies one 3U rack slot and is used in protection systems for steam and gas turbines, compressors, hydro machines and other critical equipment.

02

Performance

01

Provides two independent differential transducer channels for casing vibration monitoring.

02

Supports overall velocity measurement in mm/s or in/s with adjustable frequency conditioning.

03

Offers front and rear buffered outputs, 0/4-20 mA proportional outputs and 0-10 V outputs.

04

Supports remote limit multiply and trip bypass within the configured protection strategy.

System Integration

  • Confirm the installed sensor type, sensitivity, polarity and channel frequency range before moving a protection channel.
  • Back up channel scaling, alert and danger setpoints, delays, relay voting and proportional-output assignments.
  • Place the affected trips in the authorized bypass state before using the hot-swap feature.
  • After insertion, compare buffered signal, overall value and alarm behavior with an independent vibration reference.
05

Applications

  • Bearing-case velocity protection on steam turbines, gas turbines and compressors.
  • Hydro and nuclear rotating machinery using electro-dynamic seismic transducers.
  • Retrofit paths retaining 9266, 9267 or 9268 sensors while renewing the monitoring card.

FAQ

Can A6120 be used with a piezoelectric velocity sensor?

The documented monitor is designed for electro-dynamic sensors. Any alternate sensor path requires a complete compatibility review of power, sensitivity, bias and frequency response.

What data should be exported before replacing A6120?

Save channel range, sensor sensitivity, filter settings, setpoints, delays, trip logic, relay voting and analog-output scaling.

How should A6120 be proved after a hot swap?

Verify card diagnostics, sensor signal, buffered waveform, overall velocity, analog outputs and alarm relays before removing bypass.

What can cause an A6120 channel to read incorrectly even when the card is healthy?

Sensor polarity, open wiring, poor shielding, changed mounting stiffness and incorrect sensitivity or filter configuration can all affect the reading.

What spare information should be stored with A6120?

Keep the rack slot, module revision, channel configuration, sensor identities and latest loop-test record together.
