Frame 5 Unidrive SP with separate normal- and heavy-duty ratings

Control Techniques SP5402 Unidrive SP AC Drive

A frame 5 Unidrive SP drive documented at 125 hp with duty-dependent output current.

01

Product Profile

Control Techniques SP5402 is a Unidrive SP variable-speed drive in the 380–460 V three-phase class. Manufacturer migration tables separate its normal-duty and heavy-duty ratings and map the installation to current Unidrive M700-series hardware.

Application conditions, switching frequency, motor load, feedback, communications and option modules must be captured before replacement. A part-number crossover is the beginning of migration engineering, not the completed design.

System Role

01

Unidrive SP supports three click-in option slots for communication, feedback, I/O and application modules.

02

A SMARTCARD can store parameter sets and PLC programs for maintenance and sequential machine build.

03

Safe Torque Off is standard; additional high-speed safety functions require the documented SM-Safety option.

04

Available communication options include PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET RT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, CANopen, EtherCAT and SERCOS.

04

Compatibility & Service

  • Export parameters and PLC programs and read the SMARTCARD before decommissioning.
  • Record every option-module type and slot, feedback device, fieldbus identity, I/O use and braking hardware.
  • Review the normal- or heavy-duty basis and the actual switching frequency rather than comparing horsepower alone.
  • After migration, tune the motor, verify safety and feedback, test communications and validate the machine sequence.
05

Applications

  • High-power pumps, fans, conveyors and process machinery in the documented voltage class.
  • Speed and torque control where the installed motor and load profile support the selected duty rating.
  • Systems using encoder, communications or application option modules.
  • Planned migration to Unidrive M700-series hardware after a complete option and interface audit.

FAQ

Q01

Why do SP5402 current values differ between published tables?

The drive has separate duty definitions. The manufacturer crossover lists 168 A normal duty and 156 A heavy duty at the stated 3 kHz condition.

Q02

Does the M701 crossover make parameter transfer automatic?

No. The power match, option functions, fieldbus, feedback, braking, keypad and application program all require separate conversion checks.

Q03

What should be copied from the SP5402 SMARTCARD before removal?

Archive the drive parameters and any PLC application, then retain the original card identity and a readable backup with the machine record.

Q04

When is M700 preferred over M701 in a Unidrive SP migration?

The manufacturer notes that SP applications using SM-Ethernet should be reviewed for an M700 migration path rather than assuming M701.

Q05

Which mechanical records help plan an SP5402 retrofit?

Record frame 5 clearances, cable entry, bus and motor conductors, braking components, cooling path and the mounting points used by retrofit kit 3470-0087.
