During the golden autumn season, China welcomes two major festivals: the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Reunion Festival or the Moon Worship Festival, is one of China's four major traditional festivals. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month and symbolizes family reunion.
National Day, held annually on October 1st, is a major holiday commemorating the founding of the People's Republic of China. While typically a three-day holiday, it became a "Golden Week" in 1999, with weekends preceding and following, allowing for a seven-day holiday, making it an ideal time for travel and family reunions.
This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 29th, and the National Day holiday begins on October 1st. The double holidays provide an ideal opportunity for family reunions and holiday travel.
Cultural Heritage and Stories: Reunion and National Feelings
Centered by "reunion, homesickness, and prayer for blessings," the Mid-Autumn Festival continues rich folk customs such as moon worship, moon appreciation, hanging lanterns, guessing lantern riddles, and fire dragon dances. The mythical stories of Chang'e flying to the moon and Wu Gang cutting down the cassia tree add a romantic touch to the festival and embody people's yearning for a better life.
National Day, on the other hand, embodies national symbols and national pride. Grand military parades, solemn flag-raising ceremonies, and celebratory mass events not only showcase the country's achievements but also inspire public confidence and cohesion.
