ABB CD522 Encoder, Counter and PWM Module
Two encoder inputs, two PWM outputs and configurable 24 V DC channels support compact high-speed motion and counting tasks.
Key Information
ABB CD522 is an S500 function module for AC500 automation systems. It combines two encoder inputs with integrated 5 V encoder supplies, two pulse-width-modulated outputs, two 24 V DC digital inputs and eight configurable 24 V DC digital I/O channels. The high-speed counter function reaches the documented 300 kHz limit, while module-level isolation separates the field-side function block from the station I/O bus.
Functions
Core Functions
- Acquires signals from two compatible encoders through dedicated high-speed input paths.
- Provides two integrated 5 V supplies for the encoder connections.
- Generates two PWM outputs for pulse-controlled machine functions.
- Processes two fixed 24 V DC digital inputs.
- Allows eight additional 24 V DC channels to be configured as digital inputs or outputs.
- Supports fast counting up to the documented 300 kHz limit.

Installation
- Install the module on a compatible S500 terminal unit within an AC500 station.
- Keep encoder conductors and high-speed pulse wiring separated from switching-power cables.
- Confirm encoder supply voltage, signal type and reference wiring before energizing the channel.
- Restore every counter mode, scaling value and PWM parameter from the controller project.
- Commission one encoder and one output path at a time, then verify the remaining configurable channels.
Lifecycle
- ABB lists the standard CD522 article in the Active lifecycle phase.
- The CD522-XC environmental version is a different orderable article and must not be treated as the same product.
- Record the terminal unit, channel assignments and encoder wiring before module replacement.
- Preserve the original controller configuration because high-speed input and PWM parameters are application-specific.
- Use the exact article number when requesting a maintenance replacement.
