ABB CM598-CN CANopen Master Communication Module
A dedicated CANopen master for organizing cyclic process exchange, parameter services and network supervision from an ABB AC500 controller.
Key Information
CM598-CN adds a CANopen master interface to a supported AC500 processor installation. It combines a netX communication processor, dual-port exchange memory and a front CAN connector to manage a field network of slave devices. Receive and transmit process-data resources are sized independently for deterministic application mapping.
Functions
- Controls CANopen network management from the master side of the bus.
- Exchanges cyclic process values through configured receive and transmit PDOs.
- Uses SDO client services for parameter-oriented communication with slave nodes.
- Supports heartbeat and node-guarding mechanisms for device supervision.
- Reports module and CAN network state through dedicated front indicators.

Installation
- Mount the standard module on a compatible TB5xx terminal base and keep the XC article separate for extreme environments.
- Set a unique network-node plan and choose one CAN transfer rate for every device on the segment.
- Apply correct bus topology and termination at the two physical ends of the CAN line.
- Import and review device descriptions before mapping PDOs or issuing SDO parameters.
- Commission slave nodes in stages and use the CAN-RUN and CAN-ERR indications during diagnosis.
Lifecycle
- ABB identifies the standard CM598-CN article as Active.
- Store the CANopen project, node identifiers, PDO map and parameter records with the controller backup.
- Review controller and communication-module firmware when expanding an established network.
- Keep spare connectors and termination information with the maintenance documentation.
- Validate node supervision and all mapped process values after a module exchange.
